Most Popular Beaches in the World: 10 Icons to Visit

The world's most popular beaches, from Rio's Copacabana and Honolulu's Waikiki to Crete's pink-sand Elafonissi, draw millions with sand, surf and story. This guide explains what makes each of the ten famous, when to go, how to get there and what most visitors never notice.

"Popular" can mean many things, so this list uses a clear test. Every beach below meets at least two of three conditions: it draws very large crowds, backed by official visitor or event figures where they exist; it ranks highly in the Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Beaches awards for 2025 or 2026, which are based on millions of traveller reviews, or in The World's 50 Best Beaches list, which is voted by more than 1,000 travel professionals; or it has worldwide cultural fame through film, music, sport or history.

The result mixes big-city icons with remote island shores. The order is not a strict ranking. It starts with the beaches that attract the largest crowds and moves towards smaller, more fragile places whose fame comes from beauty and reputation. Where a number is an estimate, the text says so.

1. Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

AttributeDetails
CountryBrazil
LocationSouth Zone of Rio de Janeiro, between Leme and the Copacabana Fort
LengthAbout 4 km
Best time to visitDecember to March for summer atmosphere; April to June or September to November for fewer crowds
Nearest airportRio de Janeiro–Galeão International (GIG); Santos Dumont (SDU) for domestic flights
Known forNew Year's Eve, free mega-concerts, the wave-pattern promenade
RecognitionThe seafront is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea" (2012)

Why Copacabana Is Famous

Copacabana grew from a remote fishing area after tunnels linked it to central Rio around the turn of the twentieth century, and its glamour was sealed when the Copacabana Palace hotel opened on 13 August 1923. Film stars, presidents and royalty followed, and the beach became a symbol of Brazilian glamour.

Its modern fame comes from the size of its crowds. Rio's New Year's Eve celebration, recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest in the world, drew an estimated 2.6 million people to Copacabana for the arrival of 2026, according to city authorities. The beach has also hosted some of the largest concerts in history: city figures put Madonna's free show in May 2024 at 1.6 million people, Lady Gaga's in May 2025 at 2.1 million, and Shakira's in May 2026 at 2 million. Copacabana also hosted beach volleyball at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Things to Do

  • Walk the full promenade from Leme to the Copacabana Fort, which houses a small army museum and café.
  • Watch or join a game of footvolley, a mix of football and volleyball that Rio claims as its own invention.
  • Try a fresh coconut or a caipirinha from one of the beach kiosks.
  • Watch the sunset from Arpoador rock at the southern end, between Copacabana and Ipanema.

Travel Tips

  • Bring only what you need to the sand; petty theft is common on crowded days.
  • Use the Metro (Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo stations) to avoid traffic.
  • For New Year's Eve, book accommodation months ahead and follow the local custom of wearing white.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • The black-and-white wave pattern of the pavement came from Portugal; landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx redesigned the promenade around 1970, keeping the waves along the beach and adding abstract mosaics on the building side.
  • The Rolling Stones held a record free concert here in 2006 with about 1.5 million people, a figure later surpassed by Madonna and Lady Gaga.
  • Rio's city government cleans the sand overnight after major events using sand-screening machines and tractors.

2. Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States

AttributeDetails
CountryUnited States (Hawaii)
LocationSouth shore of Oahu, Honolulu
LengthAbout 2 miles (3.2 km)
Best time to visitApril to May and September to October (good weather, lower prices)
Nearest airportDaniel K. Inouye International Airport, Honolulu (HNL)
Known forGentle surf, beginner surfing, Diamond Head views
Visitor scaleOahu received 5,679,047 visitors in 2025 (Hawaii DBEDT)

Why Waikiki Is Famous

Long before hotels arrived, Waikiki was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty and a place where surfing, he'e nalu, was part of daily life. In the early twentieth century, local watermen known as the Waikiki beach boys taught visitors to surf and paddle outrigger canoes. The most famous of them, Duke Kahanamoku, won Olympic swimming gold in 1912 and went on to introduce surfing to audiences around the world. His bronze statue, unveiled in 1990, stands on the beach today.

Waikiki is also a man-made landscape in many ways. Wetlands behind the shore were drained in the 1920s, and as erosion ate away at the beach, sand was shipped in, including loads from Manhattan Beach in California during the 1920s and 1930s. The beach has needed regular replenishment ever since.

Things to Do

  • Take a beginner surf lesson; the long, slow waves are ideal for learning.
  • Ride an outrigger canoe out to the breaks.
  • Hike Diamond Head (Lēʻahi) for views over Waikiki; non-residents need an advance reservation.
  • Watch the Friday-night fireworks off the Hilton Hawaiian Village, when scheduled.

Travel Tips

  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen; Hawaii bans sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.
  • Sunrise and early morning are the best times for calm water and empty sand.
  • Kuhio Beach, the section with a protective seawall, is the calmest area for children.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • The pink Royal Hawaiian hotel, nicknamed the Pink Palace of the Pacific, opened in 1927.
  • Waikiki means "spouting fresh water" in Hawaiian, a reference to the springs and streams that once fed the area.
  • Waikiki is not one beach but several named sections, including Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Fort DeRussy Beach, Kuhio Beach and Queen's Beach.

3. Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia

AttributeDetails
CountryAustralia
LocationWaverley, about 7 km east of central Sydney
LengthAbout 1 km
Best time to visitDecember to March for summer; September to November for mild weather and fewer people
Nearest airportSydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD)
Known forSurf lifesaving, the Icebergs ocean pool, coastal walks
RecognitionAdded to Australia's National Heritage List in 2008; No. 19 in Tripadvisor's world list for 2026

Why Bondi Is Famous

Bondi is often described as the birthplace of Australian surf lifesaving. The Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club, formed in 1907, is recognised by the New South Wales government as the country's first recorded surf lifesaving club. On 6 February 1938, a day remembered as Black Sunday, a series of large waves swept about 250 people out to sea; lifesavers brought them back to shore, but five people died. The rescue is still one of the largest in the history of the movement.

In 2008, the Australian government added Bondi to the National Heritage List, describing it as an important symbol of the country's beach culture. Television helped spread its fame worldwide: the reality series Bondi Rescue, which follows the beach's lifeguards, has been on air since 2006.

Things to Do

  • Swim at Bondi Icebergs, the ocean pool at the southern end, whose winter swimming club dates to 1929.
  • Walk the Bondi to Coogee coastal path, about 6 km of cliffs, coves and smaller beaches.
  • See Sculpture by the Sea, a free outdoor exhibition held along the coastal walk in spring.
  • Watch the surf from the North Bondi rocks at sunrise.

Travel Tips

  • Always swim between the red and yellow flags; Bondi has strong rip currents, especially at the southern end.
  • There is no train to the beach; take the train to Bondi Junction and then a bus, or a direct bus from the city.
  • Arrive early on summer weekends, when parking is almost impossible.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • According to Waverley Council, the name Bondi comes from an Aboriginal word meaning water breaking over rocks.
  • The Bondi Pavilion, built in the 1920s, now serves as a community and arts centre.
  • Bondi does not appear in The World's 50 Best Beaches 2026, a sign of the difference between popularity and expert ranking.

4. South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida, United States

AttributeDetails
CountryUnited States (Florida)
LocationSouthern end of the barrier island of Miami Beach
Best time to visitMarch to May (warm, dry and before the summer heat)
Nearest airportMiami International Airport (MIA)
Known forArt Deco architecture, Ocean Drive, nightlife, colourful lifeguard towers
Visitor scaleGreater Miami and Miami Beach welcomed more than 27.2 million visitors in 2023 (City of Miami Beach)
RecognitionMiami Beach Architectural District listed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1979

Why South Beach Is Famous

Miami Beach was built on a mangrove-covered barrier island in the early twentieth century. During the 1930s and early 1940s, builders lined its streets with hotels and apartments in the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles, painted in pastel colours. By the 1970s, many were decaying, and a group of residents led by Barbara Capitman formed the Miami Design Preservation League to save them.

Their campaign succeeded. On 14 May 1979, the Miami Beach Architectural District became the first primarily twentieth-century district on the US National Register of Historic Places, with about 800 contributing buildings. The restored district, television shows such as Miami Vice in the 1980s, and a booming club scene turned South Beach into a global destination.

Things to Do

  • Take a walking tour of the Art Deco district along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue.
  • Relax in Lummus Park, the palm-lined strip between Ocean Drive and the sand.
  • Walk the South Pointe Park Pier at sunset to watch cruise ships leave the Port of Miami.
  • Visit during Art Deco Weekend in January, when the district celebrates its architecture.

Travel Tips

  • Hurricane season runs from June to November; check forecasts and travel insurance.
  • Spring break in March can be very crowded, and the city has introduced stricter rules in recent years.
  • The Miami Beach trolley is free and connects South Beach with other neighbourhoods.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • The brightly painted lifeguard towers became a symbol of the city after many were rebuilt following Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
  • Much of the beach is wider than it once was thanks to repeated sand nourishment projects.

5. Elafonissi Beach, Crete, Greece

AttributeDetails
CountryGreece
LocationSouth-west corner of Crete, about 75 km from Chania
Best time to visitMay and September (warm water, fewer crowds than July and August)
Nearest airportChania International Airport (CHQ)
Known forPink-tinted sand, a shallow turquoise lagoon, a walkable islet
RecognitionTripadvisor's No. 1 beach in the world for 2025 and No. 2 for 2026; protected under the EU's Natura 2000 network

Why Elafonissi Is Famous

Elafonissi is both a beach and a small island, separated by a lagoon so shallow that visitors can often wade across. Its sand is tinted pink in places by the crushed shells of foraminifera, tiny marine organisms. The combination of pink sand, warm, calm water and dunes covered with juniper and wild lilies made it one of the most photographed places in Greece.

It shot to the top of Tripadvisor's global ranking in 2025, re-entering the list after several years away, and stayed at No. 2 in 2026. Because the area is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected sites, building and camping are restricted.

Things to Do

  • Wade across the lagoon to the islet and walk to its small lighthouse.
  • Explore the quieter coves on the western side of the islet.
  • Combine the trip with Kedrodasos, a nearby beach with a forest of ancient juniper trees.
  • Stop at the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery on the drive back.

Travel Tips

  • The road is winding; allow about two hours from Chania, or take an organised day trip.
  • Arrive before 10 am in summer to find space and parking.
  • Do not take any sand; removing it is prohibited and damages the pink colouring.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • In 1824, during the Greek War of Independence, Ottoman-Egyptian forces killed several hundred Cretan refugees, mostly women and children, who had sheltered on the islet. A memorial stands on its highest point.
  • The pink colour is strongest at the water's edge and fades quickly in photographs taken at midday.
  • The islet's dunes are home to protected plants, including the sea daffodil.

6. Eagle Beach, Aruba

AttributeDetails
CountryAruba (constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands)
LocationWest coast of Aruba, north of the capital Oranjestad
Best time to visitAll year; April to August has fewer crowds and lower prices
Nearest airportQueen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), about 15 minutes by car
Known forWide white sand, calm water, the fofoti trees, sea turtle nesting
RecognitionTripadvisor world No. 3 in 2025 and No. 4 in 2026

Why Eagle Beach Is Famous

Eagle Beach is one of the widest beaches in the Caribbean, with soft white sand and calm, clear water on Aruba's sheltered west coast. Unlike the high-rise strip of Palm Beach further north, it is lined mostly with low-rise hotels, which keeps it open and uncrowded.

Its most famous feature is a pair of windswept fofoti trees (Conocarpus erectus), bent permanently towards the south-west by the trade winds. They are often mistaken for divi-divi trees and appear on countless postcards and wedding photos. Aruba's location outside the main Atlantic hurricane belt adds to its appeal as a year-round destination.

Things to Do

  • Photograph the fofoti trees at sunrise, before the crowds arrive.
  • Snorkel or join a catamaran trip to nearby reefs and the Antilla shipwreck.
  • Watch for marked turtle nests between March and November.
  • Rent a shaded palapa (thatched beach umbrella) for the day.

Travel Tips

  • Shade is limited; bring a hat and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Stay away from nest markers and never use flash photography near hatchlings.
  • The beach is public, but some palapas are reserved for hotel guests.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • Eagle Beach is Aruba's main nesting beach for sea turtles, especially leatherbacks.
  • Aruba receives very little rain, which is why cacti grow in its interior.

7. Praia da Falésia, Algarve, Portugal

AttributeDetails
CountryPortugal
LocationBetween Olhos de Água and Vilamoura, Albufeira municipality, Algarve
LengthAbout 6 km
Best time to visitMay to June and September to October
Nearest airportFaro Airport (FAO), roughly 30 minutes by car
Known forRed, orange and white cliffs above a long golden beach
RecognitionTripadvisor world No. 5 in 2025 and 2026; Blue Flag 2026

Why Praia da Falésia Is Famous

Falésia simply means cliff in Portuguese, and the name fits. A long band of red, ochre and white sandstone cliffs, topped with umbrella pines, runs behind about six kilometres of golden sand. The colours change through the day and glow at sunset, which has made the beach one of the most photographed in southern Europe.

The beach is long enough to feel open even in summer, when other Algarve coves are packed. It is also recognised as a geological site within the Algarvensis geopark, which covers the municipalities of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira.

Things to Do

  • Walk the length of the beach at low tide, from Olhos de Água to Vilamoura.
  • Take the clifftop paths for views over the coast.
  • Visit the fishing village of Olhos de Água, named after the freshwater springs that bubble up on its beach at low tide.
  • Try grilled sardines or cataplana, a Portuguese seafood stew, at a nearby restaurant.

Travel Tips

  • Do not sit directly below the cliffs; rockfalls happen along the Algarve coast.
  • The Atlantic is cooler than the Mediterranean, even in summer.
  • Parking near the main access points fills early in July and August.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • The cliffs are made of soft sediments that erode visibly over the years.
  • Albufeira, the nearest large town, was a small fishing village before mass tourism arrived in the 1960s and 1970s.

8. Grace Bay, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

AttributeDetails
CountryTurks and Caicos Islands (British Overseas Territory)
LocationNorth coast of Providenciales

Known forPowder-white sand, turquoise water, a protected barrier reef
RecognitionTripadvisor's No. 1 beach in the world in 2016; No. 10 in The World's 50 Best Beaches 2025

Why Grace Bay Is Famous

Grace Bay is the centrepiece of Turks and Caicos tourism. Its fine white sand, made largely of broken-down coral and shell, stays cool underfoot, and an offshore barrier reef keeps the water calm and clear. The beach and its waters lie within Princess Alexandra National Park, which protects the coastline and reef.

The beach came to global attention when Tripadvisor named it the best beach in the world in 2016, and it has stayed on expert lists since, including tenth place in The World's 50 Best Beaches 2025.

Things to Do

  • Snorkel at Smith's Reef or Bight Reef (Coral Gardens), reachable straight from the shore.
  • Kayak or paddleboard across the calm water.
  • Take a boat trip to see conch, rays and small islands such as Little Water Cay, home to protected rock iguanas.
  • Visit the Thursday-evening Island Fish Fry at Bight Park for local food and music.

Travel Tips

  • Turks and Caicos is expensive; book accommodation early for winter travel.
  • Taking conch, coral or shells from the national park is prohibited.
  • The US dollar is the official currency.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • Building heights along Grace Bay are limited, so resorts stay relatively low-rise.
  • Conch is a local staple, and conch fritters are the islands' signature snack.
  • Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory, not part of the Bahamas, although the two are close neighbours.

9. Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Thailand

AttributeDetails
CountryThailand
LocationKoh Phi Phi Leh, Krabi province, within Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park
Best time to visitNovember to April (dry season); closed every year from 1 August to 30 September
Nearest airportKrabi International (KBV) or Phuket International (HKT), then by boat
Known forLimestone cliffs, film fame, a celebrated conservation recovery
Visitor scaleBefore 2018, up to about 5,000 visitors a day at peak times (press estimates)

Why Maya Bay Is Famous

Maya Bay was a quiet cove until the 2000 film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, turned it into one of the most famous beaches on Earth. Over the following two decades, boatloads of visitors arrived every day, and by 2018 reports said up to 5,000 people were landing at peak times. The coral was badly damaged and the bay's ecosystem was struggling.

In June 2018, Thai authorities closed the bay. It stayed shut for more than three years while scientists replanted coral and studied the recovery. It reopened in January 2022 with strict rules: boats may no longer enter the bay itself, visitors arrive by a pier on the far side of the island, swimming is banned, and numbers are controlled with timed visits. Blacktip reef sharks, which had largely vanished, have returned in large numbers.

Things to Do

  • Visit the beach on a day trip from Phuket, Krabi or Koh Phi Phi Don.
  • Watch for juvenile blacktip reef sharks in the shallows from the viewing area.
  • Snorkel at nearby Pileh Lagoon and Loh Samah Bay, where tours usually stop.

Travel Tips

  • Pay the national park entrance fee, which is separate from the tour price.
  • Choose early-morning tours to avoid the busiest time slots.
  • Check the dates: the bay closes for two months each year for recovery.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • The film crew reshaped parts of the beach during production, which caused controversy and legal action in Thailand.
  • Swimming is limited to knee-deep wading to protect the coral and the sharks.
  • Maya Bay's closure became a global example of how overtourism can be reversed.

10. Anse Source d'Argent, La Digue, Seychelles

AttributeDetails
CountrySeychelles
LocationWest coast of La Digue, entered through L'Union Estate
Best time to visitApril to May and October to November, between the trade-wind seasons
Nearest airportSeychelles International Airport (SEZ) on Mahé, then ferry to La Digue (usually via Praslin)
Known forSculpted granite boulders, shallow turquoise water, white sand
RecognitionNo. 7 in The World's 50 Best Beaches 2025

Why Anse Source d'Argent Is Famous

Most tropical beaches are known for sand and palms. Anse Source d'Argent is known for its rocks. Huge granite boulders, weathered into smooth curves and streaked pink and grey, rise out of the sand and shallow water, creating small coves and pools. The Seychelles' inner islands are granite, unlike the coral islands of many other tropical nations, which gives them this unusual look.

The beach is a favourite of photographers, advertisers and honeymooners and is often described as one of the most photographed beaches in the world. Expert voters placed it seventh in The World's 50 Best Beaches 2025.

Things to Do

  • Explore the chain of small coves by walking and wading between the boulders.
  • Visit L'Union Estate's old copra mill, plantation house and giant Aldabra tortoises on the way in.
  • Rent a bicycle, the main form of transport on La Digue.
  • Snorkel in the shallow, reef-protected water at high tide.

Travel Tips

  • Entry is through L'Union Estate, which charges a daily fee (SCR 150 for foreign visitors at the time of writing).
  • Visit at mid to high tide; at low tide much of the water becomes too shallow for swimming.
  • Arrive early or late in the day to avoid tour groups.

Lesser-Known Facts

  • La Digue has very few cars; bicycles and walking are the usual way to get around.
  • The granite of the Seychelles is among the oldest oceanic granite in the world.
  • Tickets bought late in the afternoon at L'Union Estate are valid for the following day.

Bonus: India's Most Celebrated Beach

India does not have a beach on this global list, but Radhanagar Beach on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands comes closest in reputation. In 2004, Time magazine called it the best beach in Asia, and in 2020 it was among the first Indian beaches to receive the international Blue Flag eco-label. By late 2025, India had 17 Blue Flag beaches, according to published reports.

Visitors reach Radhanagar by flying to Port Blair and taking a ferry to Swaraj Dweep. The beach is best between November and April, and it is known for its sunsets, calm water in the dry season and the forest that grows right up to the sand. For sheer crowds, however, India's busiest coastlines remain those of Goa and Mumbai.

Frequently Asked Questions

By crowd size, Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro has the strongest claim: about 2.6 million people gathered there for New Year's Eve 2026, according to city estimates. By traveller reviews, Tripadvisor named Isla Pasion in Mexico the best beach for 2026 and Elafonissi in Greece the best for 2025.

Which country has the most beautiful beaches?

There is no single answer, but Greece, Australia, Thailand and the Philippines appear repeatedly in both the Tripadvisor awards and The World's 50 Best Beaches. Greece took two of the top three places in Tripadvisor's 2026 world list, with Elafonissi and Balos Lagoon, both in Crete.

What is the best beach in the world in 2026?

It depends on the ranking. Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice awards, based on traveller reviews, chose Isla Pasion near Cozumel, Mexico. The World's 50 Best Beaches, voted by more than 1,000 travel professionals, chose Entalula Beach in Palawan, Philippines.

Why is the sand at Elafonissi pink?

The pink colour comes from the crushed shells of foraminifera, tiny single-celled marine organisms with reddish shells. Their fragments mix with white sand and are most visible at the water's edge. Removing sand is prohibited because it damages this natural colouring.

Can you swim at Maya Bay?

No. Since the bay reopened in January 2022, swimming has been banned to protect the recovering coral and the blacktip reef sharks that returned during the closure. Visitors may wade to about knee depth and view the bay from the beach and walkways.

Which Indian beach has a Blue Flag?

Several do. Radhanagar Beach in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was among India's first Blue Flag beaches in 2020, and by late 2025 the country had 17, spread across states including Gujarat, Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Conclusion

The world's most popular beaches earn their place in different ways. Copacabana, Waikiki, Bondi and South Beach are part of the identity of great cities and attract crowds measured in millions. Elafonissi, Eagle Beach, Praia da Falésia and Grace Bay win the votes of travellers who rate them year after year. Maya Bay and Anse Source d'Argent show how beauty can make a place famous, and how that fame has to be managed to protect it.

Whichever you visit, travel lightly: use reef-safe sunscreen, take nothing from the sand, follow local rules and support local businesses. The beaches that top today's lists will only stay there if their visitors help keep them that way.
