Record-breaking roller coasters of the world include a Saudi ride that reaches 250 km/h, a Japanese track nearly 2.5 km long and a plunge past vertical.
This Finepedia guide, written in October 2026, rides through 10 record-setting roller coasters on three continents, from the newest speed champion in Saudi Arabia to a wooden classic in New Jersey. We checked each ride against park and manufacturer figures, industry awards and reference works. Records change often, so every figure is given as of October 2026. For more giant structures, see the Finepedia guides Largest Malls in the World: Top 10 and Biggest Hotels in the World: Top 10.
How We Chose These
With thousands of coasters operating worldwide, we focused on rides that hold, or recently held, a clear world or regional record: height, speed, length, steepness, inversions or a record for their type. Every ride on the list was operating or listed by its park as of October 2026. Closed record-holders, such as Kingda Ka, get a mention in the FAQ section. Each coaster gets a short profile, four key facts and a further note.

1. Falcons Flight Broke Three World Records at Once
Falcons Flight opened on 31 December 2025 at Six Flags Qiddiya City, near Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Built by Intamin, a ride maker based in Liechtenstein, it claimed three titles at once: the tallest, the fastest and the longest coaster on Earth on its first day. The track runs along the edge of a cliff, so riders fall much farther than the height of the structure.
Key Facts
- Location: Six Flags Qiddiya City, Saudi Arabia
- Height: 163 m, with a 158 m plunge
- Speed: up to 250 km/h
- Length: about 4,250 m of track
Why It Matters
Falcons Flight is the first so-called exa coaster, a ride whose total change in elevation, about 195 m, is greater than 600 feet. It took the records from three different rides: Top Thrill 2 for height, Formula Rossa for speed and Steel Dragon 2000 for length. It is part of Qiddiya, a huge entertainment city being built as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan.
2. Formula Rossa Feels Like a Racing Car
Formula Rossa at Ferrari World on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, opened in November 2010 and instantly became the speed champion of the coaster world. It is themed to Formula One, and its train is shaped like a racing car. A hydraulic launch fires riders from a standstill to 100 km/h in about two seconds.
Key Facts
- Location: Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
- Top speed: 240 km/h, reached in 4.9 seconds
- Launch: hydraulic, rated at about 20,800 horsepower
- Record: fastest coaster from 2010 until the end of 2025
Did You Know?
At such speeds, insects and sand can sting the skin, so riders on Formula Rossa wear protective goggles. The ride's designers also had to protect its machinery from the desert heat. Its launch works in a similar way to the catapults that fling fighter jets from aircraft carriers.
3. Top Thrill 2 Climbs a 128 m Tower
Cedar Point's Top Thrill 2, in Sandusky, Ohio, began life in 2003 as Top Thrill Dragster, the first coaster to pass 400 feet in height, a class known as a strata coaster. After an accident in 2021 closed the original ride, it was rebuilt with a second tall tower and returned in 2024 under the name Top Thrill 2.
Key Facts
- Location: Cedar Point, Ohio, United States
- Height: 420 feet, about 128 m
- Speed: about 190 km/h
- Launch: electric motors firing the train forward, backward and forward again
Why It Matters
The new launch is less powerful than the old hydraulic one, so the train rocks forward and backward up the two towers to build speed before its final run. After problems with its trains, it reopened in 2025 and briefly regained the title of world's tallest coaster, once Kingda Ka had shut, until Falcons Flight opened later that year.
4. Steel Dragon 2000 Ruled for Length
Steel Dragon 2000 opened on 1 August 2000 at Nagashima Spa Land, a theme park in Mie Prefecture, Japan. Its name comes from the Chinese zodiac, in which 2000 was a year of the dragon. For a quarter of a century it held the record for the longest roller coaster track in the world.
Key Facts
- Location: Nagashima Spa Land, Japan
- Length: 2,479 m
- First plunge: about 94 m
- Speed: about 153 km/h
Did You Know?
The lift hill is so long that it uses two separate chains, each with its own motor, to haul the train to the top. Steel Dragon 2000 shares the title of fastest coaster with a lift hill, rather than a launch, with Fury 325 in the United States. It lost its length record to Falcons Flight in 2025.
5. Fury 325 Is a Fan Favourite
Fury 325 opened in March 2015 at Carowinds, an amusement park on the border of North and South Carolina near Charlotte. Its name comes from its height of 325 feet, about 99 m, which makes it the tallest coaster in the world that uses a traditional chain lift hill rather than a launch.
Key Facts
- Location: Carowinds, Charlotte, North Carolina
- Height: 325 feet, about 99 m
- Speed: about 153 km/h
- Track: about 2,012 m long
Why It Matters
Readers of the trade paper Amusement Today named Fury 325 the top new ride of 2015 in their Golden Ticket Awards, and from 2016 onward it has repeatedly topped the steel coaster category. Its track sweeps over and under the park's main entrance, giving visitors a view of the ride before they even buy a ticket.
6. Red Force Is Europe's Giant
Red Force is a launched coaster at Ferrari Land, part of the PortAventura World resort in Salou, on the coast of Catalonia in Spain. It opened in April 2017 and is the only coaster in Europe above 300 feet, a size known as a giga coaster.
Key Facts
- Location: Ferrari Land, Salou, Spain
- Height: 112 m
- Speed: 180 km/h
- Track: about 880 m long
Did You Know?
Like Formula Rossa, Red Force is themed to Ferrari's racing cars. For a few months between November 2024 and May 2025, after Kingda Ka closed and before Top Thrill 2 reopened, it briefly held the title of tallest operating coaster anywhere.
7. TMNT Shellraiser Plunges Beyond Vertical
TMNT Shellraiser is an indoor coaster at Nickelodeon Universe, a theme park within the huge American Dream shopping centre in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Themed to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it has the steepest plunge of any roller coaster, at 121.5 degrees, which means riders curve back under themselves on the way down.
Key Facts
- Location: American Dream, New Jersey, United States
- Plunge angle: 121.5 degrees
- Opened: October 2019
- Launch: about 100 km/h in two seconds
Why It Matters
TMNT Shellraiser took the steepness record from Takabisha at Fuji-Q Highland in Japan, which opened in 2011 with a 121-degree plunge. At the top of the vertical lift, the car pauses for several seconds, with riders facing the floor far below, before it is released into the plunge.
8. The Smiler Turns Riders Upside Down 14 Times
The Smiler, which opened in 2013 at the Alton Towers resort in Staffordshire, England, has 14 inversions, which set a world record for the number of times a coaster turns riders upside down. The tangled track packs dive loops, corkscrews and other twisting elements into a small area of the park.
Key Facts
- Location: Alton Towers, Staffordshire, England
- Opened: 2013
- Inversions: 14
- Maker: Gerstlauer of Germany
Did You Know?
In June 2015, two trains collided on The Smiler, and five riders were seriously injured. The ride was closed for months, and the park's owner was later fined for health and safety failures. Since then, extra safety measures have been added, and the ride remains one of the best-known in the UK.
9. Steel Vengeance Mixes Wood and Steel
Cedar Point's Steel Vengeance is a hybrid coaster, combining a steel track with a wooden support frame. It was built from the bones of Mean Streak, a timber ride that was the world's tallest wooden coaster when it opened in 1991. The firm Rocky Mountain Construction gave it new steel rails.
Key Facts
- Location: Cedar Point, Ohio, United States
- Opened: 5 May 2018
- Height: about 62 m, with a 90-degree plunge
- Speed: about 119 km/h
Why It Matters
When it opened, Steel Vengeance set 10 world records, including tallest, fastest and longest hybrid coaster. It was the first hybrid hypercoaster, a hybrid over 200 feet tall. Its trains are themed to characters in a Wild West outlaw story, and it has ranked among the top five steel coasters in the Golden Ticket Awards since it opened.
10. El Toro Is a Wooden Wonder
Named after the Spanish word for bull, El Toro opened in June 2006 at the Six Flags park in Jackson, New Jersey. Its track pieces were made in a factory and fitted together on site, which gives it an unusually smooth ride for a wooden coaster. When it opened, its 76-degree first plunge was the steepest of any wooden coaster.
Key Facts
- Location: Jackson, New Jersey (Six Flags Great Adventure)
- Height: about 55 m
- Speed: about 110 km/h
- Ranking: often in the top three wooden coasters in the Golden Ticket Awards
Did You Know?
In 2008, South Korea's T Express, at the Everland resort, took El Toro's steepness record. It remains among the tallest and fastest wooden coasters in the world. It stands in the Mexican-themed part of the park, on the site of an older coaster called Viper.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happened to Kingda Ka?
The New Jersey ride Kingda Ka opened in 2005 as the tallest and fastest coaster on Earth, with a 139 m tower and a speed of about 206 km/h. It stayed the tallest coaster for nearly 20 years but closed permanently in November 2024 and was then demolished.
Are record-breaking roller coasters safe?
Serious accidents are rare compared with the number of rides taken each year. Coasters are designed with many safety features, and parks inspect them daily. Riders should follow height limits, health warnings and staff instructions.
Conclusion
From the cliff-edge speed of Falcons Flight to the classic thrills of El Toro, these ten roller coasters show how engineers keep pushing the limits of height, speed and design.
