Most visited countries in the world are led by France, which welcomed 102 million foreign tourists in 2024, followed by Spain and then the United States.

This Finepedia guide, written in October 2026, ranks the 10 countries that received the most international tourist arrivals in 2024, the latest full year in the UN Tourism rankings. For each country we give its arrival figure, what draws visitors and a fact worth knowing. Arrivals count trips, not people, so one traveller who visits twice is counted twice. For more travel ideas, see the Finepedia guides Most Visited Museums in the World: Top 10 and Most Dangerous Tourist Destinations in the World: Top 10.

How We Chose These

The ranking follows the International Tourism Highlights report published by UN Tourism, the United Nations agency for travel, which counts visitors who arrive from abroad and stay at least one night. In 2024, about 1.4 billion international tourist trips were made worldwide, roughly back to the level seen before the pandemic. China's 2024 figure is a UN estimate, because official data was not ready when the report was published. Japan and China fill the last two places; we list Japan first because its record total is confirmed. Each entry has a short profile, four key facts and a note on why it matters or a surprising detail.

1. France Is the World's Favourite Destination

France has topped the world's arrivals table for decades, and in 2024 it welcomed about 102 million international arrivals, the year Paris also hosted the Summer Olympics. Visitors come for Paris, the Loire's castles, the ski slopes of the Alps and the beaches of the French Riviera.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 102 million
  • Capital: Paris, the leading region for visitors
  • French Riviera: over 10 million visitors each year
  • World Heritage: more than 50 UNESCO sites

Why It Matters

Many visitors pass through France on the way to other countries, which helps explain why it tops the arrivals list but earns less from tourism than the United States or Spain. No paid monument on Earth gets more visitors than the Eiffel Tower, and Disneyland Paris is Europe's busiest theme park resort.

2. Spain Is Europe's Beach Holiday Capital

Spain had about 93.8 million international arrivals in 2024, a jump of more than 10 percent in a single year. Its long sunny coasts on the Mediterranean and Atlantic, and the Balearic and Canary Islands, have drawn holidaymakers from northern Europe since the 1960s.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 93.8 million
  • Biggest source markets: the UK, France and Germany
  • Famous resorts: Benidorm, Mallorca, Ibiza and Tenerife
  • City highlights: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Granada

Did You Know?

Spain earned around 107 billion US dollars from international visitors in 2024, behind only the United States. Its success has a downside: cities such as Barcelona and Palma have seen protests by residents over crowding and rising rents, and some places have introduced limits on holiday flats and cruise ships.

3. The United States Earns the Most From Tourism

The United States received about 72.4 million international arrivals in 2024, many of them from neighbouring Canada and Mexico. New York City is the leading destination, ahead of Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Orlando, while national parks such as the Grand Canyon draw nature lovers.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 72.4 million
  • Tourism earnings: about 214 billion US dollars, the highest in the world
  • Top city: New York
  • Theme park hub: Orlando, Florida

Why It Matters

No other country earns as much from foreign visitors, partly because trips are long and the country is expensive. Its huge size means travellers can choose between big cities, beaches, deserts, mountains and theme parks in a single trip.

Turkey welcomed about 60.6 million international arrivals in 2024, moving up to fourth place in the world. Istanbul, which spans the Bosporus between Europe and Asia, is packed with landmarks such as the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 60.6 million
  • Tourism capital: Antalya, on the Turkish Riviera
  • Beach resorts: Bodrum, Fethiye, Marmaris and Alanya
  • Inland highlight: the rock landscapes and balloon flights of Cappadocia

Did You Know?

Turkey climbed from sixth place in 2019 to fourth in 2024, one of the fastest rises among the top ten. Russia and Germany are among its biggest sources of visitors, and many holidaymakers book all-inclusive resort stays along the Mediterranean coast.

5. Italy Has the Most World Heritage Sites

Italy received about 57.7 million international arrivals in 2024. Visitors come for the ancient ruins of Rome, the canals of Venice, the art of Florence, the Amalfi Coast and the lakes of the north, as well as for Italian food and wine.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 57.7 million
  • World Heritage: 61 UNESCO sites, the most of any country
  • Famous sights: the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Pompeii
  • Tourism earnings: about 59 billion US dollars in 2024

Why It Matters

Italy's rich history means that small towns and villages, not just big cities, attract many visitors. Venice now charges day visitors an entry fee on busy days to manage crowds, one of the first cities in the world to do so.

6. Mexico Mixes Beaches and Ancient Ruins

Mexico had about 45 million international arrivals in 2024, more than any country in the Americas except its northern neighbour. Most visitors come from the US and Canada, drawn by Caribbean beaches, colonial cities and ancient Maya and Aztec sites.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 45 million
  • Beach hub: Cancún and the Riviera Maya on the Yucatán Peninsula
  • Pacific resorts: Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco
  • Culture: Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Day of the Dead

Did You Know?

Cancún was largely planned by the Mexican government from the 1970s, turning a quiet sandbar into one of the busiest resort areas in the Americas. Nearby, the Riviera Maya stretches south along the coast, with Playa del Carmen, Tulum and eco parks built around cenotes.

7. The United Kingdom Is Led by London

The United Kingdom welcomed about 41.8 million international arrivals in 2024, a rise of 12 percent, helping it climb to seventh place. London is by far the most visited city, with free museums, royal palaces and theatres, while Edinburgh, York, Oxford, Cambridge and Bath are also popular.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 41.8 million
  • Top city: London
  • World Heritage: 33 UNESCO sites
  • Tourism earnings: about 83 billion US dollars in 2024

Why It Matters

The United States is the UK's most valuable source of visitors, many of them drawn by shared language, history and culture. Since 2025, most visitors who do not need a visa must apply for an online travel permit, called an Electronic Travel Authorisation, before arriving.

8. Germany Draws Visitors to Cities and Castles

Germany had about 37.5 million international arrivals in 2024. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Cologne are major city destinations, while fairy-tale castles such as Neuschwanstein, the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest attract many visitors from abroad.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 37.5 million
  • Famous events: Munich's Oktoberfest and Christmas markets
  • Trade fairs: Berlin hosts ITB, a giant yearly travel industry fair
  • Business travel: a large share of visits

Did You Know?

Germany is a leading destination for business and conference travel, with huge trade fairs in Frankfurt, Hanover and Düsseldorf. Its Christmas markets, held in town squares during Advent, have become so popular that tour companies sell trips just to visit them.

9. Japan Broke Its Visitor Record

Japan welcomed a record 36.9 million international arrivals in 2024, up by around 47 percent from the year before, helped by a weak yen and the end of pandemic travel limits. Visitors come for Tokyo, the temples and shrines of Kyoto, Mount Fuji, food and the spring cherry blossom season.

Key Facts

  • Arrivals in 2024: about 36.9 million, a record
  • Busiest prefectures: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Chiba and Fukuoka
  • World Heritage: 26 UNESCO sites
  • Popular sights: Sensō-ji, Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji

Why It Matters

Japan climbed from 12th place in 2019 into the top ten by 2024. Rapid growth has led to concerns about overtourism, and some towns have added fees, barriers or new rules at popular photo spots, such as near Mount Fuji.

10. China Reopened to Visitors

China completes the top ten for 2024, based on a UN estimate. After strict pandemic border controls ended in 2023, the country widened visa-free entry for many nationalities, and visitors returned to see the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Army and the karst hills of Guilin.

Key Facts

  • Rank in 2024: 10th, based on a UN estimate
  • Famous sights: the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Terracotta Army
  • Natural highlights: Huangshan, Zhangjiajie and Guilin
  • Big change: visa-free entry widened from late 2023

Did You Know?

Before the pandemic, in 2019, China ranked fourth in the world for arrivals. Greece, which had about 36 million arrivals in 2024, sits just outside the top ten and is among the most tourism-dependent of Europe's big destinations.
