The Siberian Husky is an endurance sled dog bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia, known for its striking eyes, friendly nature and stamina.

Built to pull light loads over long distances in extreme cold, the Husky became world famous after the 1925 serum run to Nome, Alaska, when dog teams relayed diphtheria antitoxin across about 1,000 km of frozen land.

This profile is part of Finepedia's Dog Breeds of the World guide, which covers every major dog family from ancient times to today.

Origin and History

The Chukchi of north-eastern Siberia relied on these dogs for transport and kept them close to their families. Fur traders brought them to Alaska in 1908 for sled races, where they surprised everyone by beating larger dogs.

Leonhard Seppala's teams, including the lead dogs Togo and Balto, made the breed a legend during the 1925 serum run. The AKC recognised the Siberian Husky in 1930. It belongs to FCI Group 5, Spitz and Primitive Types.

Appearance

Huskies are medium-sized, standing about 51 to 60 cm and weighing about 16 to 27 kg. They have a thick double coat, erect triangular ears and a brush tail. Eyes may be blue, brown, one of each, or parti-coloured.

Colours range from black and white to grey, red, sable and pure white, often with a striking facial mask.

Temperament

Siberian Huskies are friendly, outgoing and gentle, so they make poor guard dogs. They are social pack dogs that enjoy company and often howl rather than bark.

They are also independent, energetic and famous escape artists. Without enough running and stimulation they may dig, chew or roam.

Care and Health

Life expectancy is about 12 to 14 years. Eye conditions such as juvenile cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, along with hip dysplasia, are the main concerns.

The coat sheds heavily twice a year and needs regular brushing. Huskies cope poorly with heat and need shade, water and care in warm climates.
